The relaunch of the Phaeton is part of Volkswagen's plan to triple its market share throughout the world by the end of 2018. Honda Hartford sells vehicle models that are certainly popular but Honda is not as large of an automaker as Volkswagen. The automaker has the world's second largest vehicle market and the company is still looking to expand to new markets.
The U.S. market is being targeted by Volkswagen and that is where the Phaeton will be built. The U.S. model will be completely redesigned, and Volkswagen hopes that the popularity of the Phaeton will be much higher than what it was before. The former VW CEO ended up taking the Phaeton off of the market in the United States and called 20,000 annual global sales of the model a "pipe dream" for Volkswagen.
Since then the company has changed leadership and there are now better plans to release new inventory. Martin Winterkorn was the successor of the former CEO and he put his full support behind the the Phaeton. He made plans to keep the Phaeton. Last year, sales of the vehicle fell to 4,500. “The U.S. is a most lucrative market for high-end sedans and VW has to tackle that potential if it wants to credibly expand its U.S. presence,” said one German automotive think tank.
This year, Volkswagen will be releasing a fully redesigned Phaeton model with a different interior and a wider range of selection for powertrains. It will also have new front and rear sections as well as an interior that is substantially different.
